Artist Peggy Braeutigam
Peggy Braeutigam has been a resident of Issaquah for 30 years. In that time she has taught calligraphy, drawing, and pastels to adults for various organizations including Issaquah Parks and Recreation, Issaquah Gallery, Bellevue Art and Frame, Daniel Smith, Cascadia Community College, and Kirkland Arts Center. She has also been invited to teach pastel workshops for organizations around the U.S. When her children were in school, she taught calligraphy and drawing classes as a volunteer for the Issaquah School District, and more recently oil pastels and jewelry making for two after school arts programs in the Woodinville School District. In each of these classes or workshops, the emphasis has been on learning the basic techniques of the medium while having fun doing so, and then going beyond the basics to produce work in the ones own manner of painting. Many of her students have gone on to produce competition level work.
Although Peggy doesn't have a formal art education, she has taken classes and workshops from some of the best pastel professionals available anywhere. This list includes, but is not limited to Donna Aldridge, Lorenzo Chavez, Doug Dawson, Frank Federico, Alan Flatmann, Albert Handell, Richard McDaniel, Desmond O' Hagen, Urania Christy Tarbet, and Jimmy Wright.
Peggy was elected to the board of directors (2000 - 2009), and was the exhibitions chairperson (1997 - 2005) for the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). In 2001 she was presented with the IAPS Golden Mentor Award "For continued support in assisting artists to achieve their goals." In 2007 she was inducted into the IAPS Master Circle honorarium which recognizes artistic achievement through IAPS sponsored juried competitions. Since 1995 fewer than 50 pastelists have earned this honor.
Peggy has been published multiple times in The Artists' Magazine, and The Pastel Journal. Her work has been included in a book, Artists' Reference Photographs; Landscapes by Gary Green as well a reissued version of the all the photograph based books by Gary Green.
