Untitled
Ruth Mohl
Pastel and Applied Paper
Karen Klein, artist
When her husband expressed a desire to move west after finishing law school in
Boston, Ruth Mohl packed her bags and the pair ended up in Seattle. Thanks to
Ruth's knowledge of journalism, she was able to teach that subject at the
University of Washington. When Marvin suggested setting up his law practice in
Issaquah, Ruth provided her support as his legal secretary. Ruth and Marvin
were a formidable team. Marvin was the visionary and Ruth the support and voice
of reason. Their part in the shaping of Issaquah has been invaluable. Gilman
Village and Sycamore were among their most visible contributions to our
community.
Gilman Village is a delightful shopping center made up of vintage houses that
the couple bought, transported and restored at a site on Gilman Boulevard.
These historic homes would have been lost had it not been for the efforts of
Ruth and Marvin. Sycamore, situated close to old downtown Issaquah, was
structured to provide comfortable homes amongst wooded surroundings. Ruth and
Marvin's home was the first, built in 1962. Through the years others were
attracted to the gracious environment and today there are 75 homes in Sycamore.
When asked what she considered her greatest contribution to shaping Issaquah,
Ruth replied that she always worked in conjunction with Marvin's visions. They
were a team that made a difference in the lives of those who enjoy the Issaquah
community. Even though Marvin passed away four years ago, Ruth still feels his
closeness and she is proud of the things the two of them accomplished together.
Gilman Village, the creation of Ruth and Marvin Mohl, is portrayed in pastel
and collage, with a pathway leading into the center of the village and the Mohl
Family. The pathway also takes the eye to a sycamore tree that symbolizes the
Sycamore housing community that Ruth and her husband envisioned and brought to
life. The Sycamore tree is sprouting letters that make up the names of the Mohl
Family and emphasize the love of writing that the family shares. Underneath the
tree is a favorite photo of Ruth and Marvin taken in Gilman Village. The words
"Family", "Books", "Design" and "Plants" on the various buildings in the
village designate Ruth's loves and interests.
