Andy Wang was born in Shanghai, China and lived in Hong Kong before joining the military and serving for seven years in Vietnam. Andy says that he has a passion for freedom and civil rights. After coming from the crowded conditions of Singapore and Hong Kong, Andy enjoys the Issaquah environment. He takes great pride in his children and their accomplishments.

Andy bought the Mandarin Restaurant in Issaquah over 20 years ago. In the restaurant, he stops by tables to chat with the customers about the weather, families, and the growth of Issaquah over the years. He does not cook but works hard to keep the restaurant living up to its reputation as an award-winning restaurant. He not only brings quality food to the restaurant, but shares Chinese culture and his enthusiasm for the history of China.

Sandra Glazer Lake writes: Working on the print, I tried to convey the strength of Andy's character and life achievements. The red is for China, black for the years in Viet Nam, and his life in Issaquah is represented by the lion at the entrance of his Mandarin Garden restaurant in Issaquah. The lions are generally present in pairs, with the male on the right and the female on the left. The male lion has his right paw on a globe, which represents his "feeling the pulse of the earth.” In my conversations with Andy, I found a person interested in promoting peace and freedom for all people.

I chose to use these Chinese symbols in the art, as Andy has created an environment in his restaurant of fine food, good drinks, and warm hospitality. Andy can usually be found in his restaurant where he shares his knowledge of Chinese history and his extraordinary contributions to the Issaquah community.
